Extension and refurbishment of period cottage, Twyford, Nr. Winchester, Hampshire

Our client had previously tried to sell the property but when this was unsuccessful decided to consider alterations and extension of the existing. The house had previously been two cottages so the arrangement of rooms was linear and spread out, passing through rooms to reach others. One staircase had been removed and the remaining stair was at one end of the house accessed through a room. The living rooms in the house faced the noisy main road with access to the large garden being through a small kitchen or utility rooms. Being a period cottage, ceilings were low and windows small, so the house was dark and introvert with a poor connection to the large garden.

Our approach was to extend the house to provide a new kitchen and day living spaces at the rear in light tall green oak framed spaces linked directly to the large garden and the formal sitting rooms at the front of the house, The extension eliminates the ground floor corridor and creates a linking space between the ground floor rooms improving the internal connections. The staircase, which was accessed via the study, was reversed and is now accessed from a new rear entrance hall, formally the kitchen. This means you now enter the house from the rear to a dedicated hall providing circulation to ground and first floors.

The works also included refurbishment of the original house areas including updated heating, electrics and decorations. The rear garden was landscaped to provide a new patio area. Our client has also added a garden office under permitted development as a separate contract.

The house now meets all our clients needs and is no longer for sale!
